Ten things to eat in Syria



Syria is located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean sea. The Syrians have special delicacies which attract visitors to enjoy and satisfy their appetites.

Mezze-Mezze is a collection of small dishes which can be eaten as first courses or appetizers before or after the main dish.

Yalanji-Yalanji is best served cold. It is thin eggplant stuffed with rice and cooked with pomegranate juice.

Freekeh-Freekeh is cooked with chicken or lamb, chick peas and onions. Freekeh is a type of green wheat.

Toum-Toum is a light textured potent garlic dip that gets you addicted.

Kabab bil Karaz-This is served on pieces of Arabic bread in triangular cuts. Kabab bil Karaz are lean minced meat balls cooked with spices and cherries.

Siyok-These are small home-made sausages with a mix of spices and is often fried or grilled.

Kleeja-These are cake pieces often with spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon.

Labneh-Labneh is a plain yoghurt dip eaten with Arabic bread.

Farooj-Farooj is roasted chicken with chilies and onions, often regarded as a special dish.

Hummus-Hummus is a ground chicken pea paste.

Most Syrian dishes are eaten by hand or scooped with bread.
